How to Create a Custom “404 Not Found” Page In Squarespace

Hey girlie, let’s fix your “oops” moment.

You know that awkward “404 Not Found” page that pops up when someone lands on a broken link?

Yeah… that page. The one that usually says nothing helpful and makes people wonder if they clicked the wrong thing.

Here’s the thing: your 404 page is actually a tiny but mighty piece of your brand.
When it’s custom, clear, and kind — it keeps people on your site instead of bouncing away.

Today I’m walking you through exactly how to create a custom 404 page in Squarespace.

How to Create a Custom 404 Page in Squarespace

Step 1: Create a New Page

Inside your Squarespace dashboard, create a new “Page.”
Name it something like Custom 404 — no need to link it in your navigation.

Step 2: Add Helpful, On-Brand Content

Keep it simple and human.
Here are a few ideas:

  • A warm headline: “Oops! Looks like you found a broken link.

  • A short note: “No worries — let’s get you back on track.”

  • Helpful links: Add a button back to your Home page, Services, or Blog.

  • A touch of your personality: A photo, a doodle, or even a silly GIF if that fits your vibe.

Pro tip: Think about what you’d want someone to do instead — then make it super obvious.

Step 3: Set Your New Page as the 404 Page

  • In your Squarespace backend, go to Settings → Advanced → 404 Page.

  • From the dropdown menu, select the page you just created.

  • Save it — done!

Squarespace will now show this new, branded page anytime someone hits a dead link on your site.

A Simple Example

Here’s a quick peek at what mine says:

“Oops! This page doesn’t exist anymore — but you still have so much to explore! Head back to the Home page or check out my latest blog posts for web design tips & SEO strategies.”
